Welcome to Shelter Life at the East Bay Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

We began as the Oakland SPCA in 1874. Today, the East Bay SPCA includes two animal shelters and three clinics in our community.

This is our day.

We call him Lucky.

Today around lunchtime, someone found a 4-week old puppy in our yard. Barely breathing, completely dehydrated and cold. Someone else must have left him there. We rushed him to the clinic where our staff put in a catheter to start administering fluids and while at first he was not responding, he then started sucking a bottle and sucking on a finger. We aren't sure how things will work out for the little one yet, but we know we will do what we can to help him pull through. We call him Lucky.

It must be hard for you all to not become highly cynical about the general population. Some of the things you see are so unbelievably cruel.

Will the little darling go into foster care when he's feeling more perky?

Actually, he is already in foster care since he was doing much better last night!

Somehow it reminds me of Clover when she came in. Funny how much I still miss her. It is like a toothache. How can you miss that?
Rose

I am so glad Lucky's doing better. I look forward to meeting him some Sunday (or even better, hearing that he got adopted on a Saturday!)
